I’m sure you’ve all been reading lately about the powerful, healthy attributes of turmeric. Here’s a way you can have a daily dose and reap it’s benefits. Use this on steamed, sauteed or roasted veggies for a special treat. You can also drizzle this delicious dressing on green salads, grain salads, soba noodles and fish.
Turmeric is part of the ginger family and has been a staple in Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian cooking for thousands of years. Holistic practitioners have long used it to clear inflammation on the inside and outside of the body but only recently have more conventional Western medicine professionals come to recognize the numerous health benefits of this amazing spice.
Some of the health benefits of turmeric are :
- blocking cancer
- powerful anti-oxidant
- potent anti-inflammatory
- osteoarthritis pain relief
- indigestion and heart-burn aid
- helps to prevent the plaque that leads to clogged arteries, heart attacks and strokes
- Early studies suggest that taking turmeric daily can cut down the number of people with prediabetes who develop diabetes.

It is thought that eating it raw is best so what better way than to include it in a delicious dressing. But let’s not forget about taste! I’ve put some scrumptious ingredients together that will guarantee a lip-smacking addition to your favorite foods and you’ll love that this healthy herb will benefit your whole family as well.
There are so many ways you could incorporate turmeric into your diet. Here’s a great site with suggestions to get your daily dose of turmeric tastiness. How about:
- smoothies
- meatballs
- curries
- shrimp
- even a Bloody Mary!
My friend, Lindsay of Cotter Crunch has long been a proponent of turmeric and you’ll find a great recipe for a healthy elixir which promotes digestion and liver here. And if you’re a lemon tea drinker, Martha Stewart has a recipe that you will love. I find it very exciting that natural methods and remedies are becoming more popular and people are taking their health into their own hands. So much to learn and it’s a fascinating journey. Cheers!
-
- 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
-
- 1/3 cup unseasoned rice vinegar
-
- 1 large or 2 small carrots, peeled, finely grated
-
- 2 tablespoons miso (I used naturally aged sweet white rice miso)
-
- 2 tablespoons ginger, finely grated
-
- 2 teaspoons turmeric, peeled, finely grated or 1/2 teaspoon powdered
-
- 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
-
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
-
- 1/2 serrano pepper, seeded, finely chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
-
- Combine all ingredients in small bowl and mix well. I gave it a couple pulses in the blender because I wanted it smooth.
- Drizzle on your choice of salad, fish, or noodles.

May 15, 2016 at 6:47 amHave just made this as, amazingly, I had all the ingredients! I used organic brown rice miso paste instead of the white miso that you used, so mine was a rich dark colour. I also added a dash of lemon juice as well. It has a really lovely flavour. Thanks for posting this.

May 16, 2016 at 5:08 amI’m going to make a point of adding turmeric much more often, Blair. The nutritional benefits are awesome! I don’t think I’ve used a store bought in 10 years, lol. If all else fails, I always have a good balsamic vinegar on hand and it’s perfect all by itself. I’m waiting for those meatballs, btw! lol

May 15, 2016 at 2:30 pmInteresting post about tumeric. I don’t think I have ever used it. I do enjoy Bloody Marys, so maybe I should give it a whirl. Homemade is always better for us. Thanks Robyn. I hope your weekend is full of fun. Lots of love from W.W.

May 20, 2016 at 9:28 amHI Robyn,
Sounds quite tasty and definitely healthy. I think turmeric is an amazing herb and has so many health benefits. I take 2000 mg capsule of turmeric a day for different reasons. One is for fighting inflammation and to help the liver detoxify. Thanks for sharing on Real Food Fridays. Pinned & tweeted !
