Oh Canada!

Canadians are a wee bit obsessed with hockey.  We suffer through long, cold, icy winters so what else are we going to do but spend the weekends in hockey arenas tearing our hair out and screaming till our lungs ache?  So ‘wee bit’  is somewhat of an understatement.  Three out of five Canadians are involved with hockey in some way.  Whether it be a coach, player, fan, hockey mom…you name it – we’re doing it.    We are a crazed, maniacal, feverish bunch who are  insanely addicted to hockey and the Olympics have come to be the poignant pinnacle of our frenzied fervor.

Yesterday was a thrilling, nail-biting, stirring, gripping, mind-blowing miracle!  The country was very quiet until 16:34 of the third period when Canada finally scored to make the game 2-1.  Until then, it seemed the enormously skilled American team was going to win the gold.  By now, everyone knows the outcome but I have to say congratulations must go to both teams for a hard fought battle that left us all breathless.

Today we are going through it all again as the men’s teams meet to decide who plays for the gold.  This hockey rivalry between the two countries has become so intense but it’s good to know we’ll always be great neighbours as well.

This video is a compilation of the reaction to the Canadian win in Vancouver 4 years ago.  It was a wonderful time for the country as it brought us all together in a joyous celebration.  I love the Olympics.  I love watching athletes from every country celebrate their wins.  The devotion it takes to find yourself on the podium cannot even be understood by us mere mortals and I`m thankful for the world stage that allows all of us to come together in appreciation of athletic greatness.

Congratulations to you on the win! There are hockey fans here in the USA but nothing to rival the passion of the Canadians as a whole. We (hubby and me) have been watching the Olympics sporadically this year. I think football may have worn us out : ) Best wishes to both countries in the mens event. Happy weekend!

Thanks, Mindy. Looks like we’ll be playing Sweden on Sunday. Should be another nail biter! You sure had lots to celebrate in football this year although the game left me sleepy, lol. Love your series! You’re such a talented writer, my friend.

YAY! How fun….today in my senior high French class, we had a “gallery walk” of some art the kids made and added some French text to, to make a comic strip. As they were observing the comic strips, I put the hockey game on the big screen in the classroom and the kids really enjoyed it. It’s Friday, and VICTORY! Hi Robyn! Anita

I didn’t know you were a Canuck, Anita! I’m so glad you were able to watch today. I think most of the schools had the TV’s on in the classroom and it’s great for national pride. Always enjoy your visits so much. Let’s cross our fingers for Sunday! Have a great weekend. xo

That’s so cool, I love that! Love seeing the unity rather than rivalry among everybody. It was special.
