Tuesday Tidbits

Good morning, everyone, and Happy Canada Day to all my Canadian readers! I hope you’re all enjoying the hot weather. Today’s Tidbits are about making the most of summer with a fabulous recipe for burgers, tips on camping and some eerie but beautiful outdoor spaces and lastly some important food for thought – ha! no pun intended.

If you are a foodie, you probably have met Tieghan from Half Baked Harvest. She is an accomplished blogger, photographer and writer who started cooking for her family at age 15. This was no small feat given that she has 6 siblings! She shops, plans and cooks the family meals all while giving us a peek into her beautiful productions. Visiting her blog is a feast for the heart and soul and I have been a long time admirer.

Tieghan - Half Baked Harvest

This burger of Tieghan’s is no ordinary burger. This is the most fantastic burger on the planet! I love her enthusiasm for this dish because it really is the perfect combination of both blended and distinct flavours, a myriad of textures, and you can imagine that every delectable bite will be heavenly. Ok, ok, I know I’m over the top but I’m almost as excited as Tieghan about this creation and I can hardly wait to make it! There’s no way I will do her version justice but hey, I need to bite into this! I’ll let you judge for yourselves. You might want to have a napkin in hand because it is SO mouth-watering!

Lobster Burgers with Brown Butter Lemon Aioli and Basil Corn Salsa, Bacon and Avocado

This burger has it all. A hot and spicy aioli, a fresh salsa and everyone’s favourite toppings – bacon and avocado. As Tieghan points out – how can you NOT put those two on top of lobster – they are made to be together.

Half Baked Harvest

“It is basically summer all packed into a delicious salsa. The base is sweet grilled corn and sweet peaches mixed together with fresh summer basil, some jalapeño, a little lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Perfection”

Even the brioche buns are homemade. Tieghan recommends using brioche, potato or pretzel buns. I know this will be the best meal I eat this summer. You will want to visit Tieghan’s blog for more – her recipes are irresistible!

If you are long time campers or new to the experience, here is a wonderful site that gives you advice on how to safely build a campfire, what to pack and what to leave at home, recognizing animal tracks, the art of making the perfect smores, and much more. I have camped quite a bit and still found this informative and helpful.

And if you want something new in the camping experience, these look like fun! These tents would be great if you were at a campsite that was rocky or too sandy. I`m thinking that kids would love them when they are having friends over for summer sleepovers. My kids love camping, I’ve actually been on websites like ToiletReviewer to find the best portable toilet for when we next go camping. There are so many things you need to buy for a camping trip! I would have spent every night in my backyard if I had one of these as a kid! You can find more styles and fun uses for these tents here.

While we’re enjoying the outdoors, how about taking a peek at Dashburst – a site that has gathered 35 photographs from Abandoned Places. These are both eerie and beautiful and I can`t stop looking at them. Some are so surreal!

And here`s a spot that I would love to visit. I know I`d want to take photos from the edge of the cliff too but looking at it from here, I`m fairly certain I would not have the courage to go too close to the edge. Would you?

Lastly, and very importantly, I have some food for thought from Suzan of simply vintageous. She is a Canadian woman with a fantastic sense of humour, a skilled DIY`er and a keen sense of style. I`ve really enjoyed reading her blog and love her vibrant writing style and vivacious personality. I definitely need to fly to Quebec to have lunch with this fellow Canuck!

Her latest post, however, is not based on humour but on wisdom and reality and it truly struck a chord with me. So many of you that I have come to know through email and comments are such thoughtful and generous people and I know you will love what she has to say. Have a wonderful day, everyone!

`We are not the houses we live in…………………

We all know how much I love beautiful houses – I do a weekly series on it after all – but at the end of the day they are really just houses – nothing more – nothing less – they don’t define us whatsoever.
When we are younger it’s all about “achieving “We measure how well we are doing by what we have.
But as you get a little older – you do in fact get a little wiser and you learn a thing or two on this journey.
First of all you learn how privileged and blessed you are to be a part of this planet for however long you’ve been granted.
Secondly you learn that lists are indeed very wise things to have and thirdly you learn that the items on your list should not be ” things ” you’ve acquired but things you’ve ” done “We are not the houses we live in.
They are merely structures to keep us safe from the outside.
Some of us may have grand homes – some of us may live in humble abodes and still others live in cars or cardboard boxes by the subway – but we are all people living inside of them – the size of the house does not
reflect the size of one’s character.`

Good morning dear Robyn! Here I am, bright and early!

Good gracious, Tieghan’s blog is outstanding! Her photos…..wow! She mentioned how that gorgeous smoothie was “her first” – this is the “story of my summer”, to attempt to do certain things for the first time. I will blog on that idea after the Europe party. But her photos, that tropical fruit smoothie, that BURGER! The woman needs to open up a restaurant!

You are just wonderful to feature other bloggers. Your own enthusiasm and generosity is so special Robyn, and thank you for spreading the kindness. Glad to hear you are having a real summer; ours is sensational, but inconsistent! One day it’s perfect, the next day it’s gloomy, cold, windy and the latter is especially bad for us because trees keep coming down everywhere! But other than that, I’m on vacation and loving it.

    COOK ON MY FRIEND! Anita

LOL, if Tieghan opened a restaurant, I’d be there every day, Anita. Her food and photography are one of my very favourites.
Thanks for your kind words but I`m just a food lover and I love introducing new bloggers to my readers. We`ve got some gloom and cold today too and it`s spoiling a lot of Canada Day parties!
Can`t wait to participate in your link party – such a fun idea!

I knew you would like this as much as I do, Mindy! I think Tieghan’s suggestion of mixing shrimp and lobster together would be fantastic!

Happy Canada Day to you Robyn! I would love one of those lobster burgers very creative and delicious. My youngest will be hiking and camping up in the New Territories this upcoming week. Now that is one cool tent, you just have to be careful when you get up in the morning as that first step out the tent door is quite a big one. Have a super week! Take Care, BAM

Thanks so much, Bobbi! It was a really fun day! I know you love your seafood so I figured you’d be a big fan of this dish. Plus you love incorporating multiple layers of flavours in your gorgeous recipes so this is for you, lol.
I was laughing thinking about the same thing with the tents, Bobbi. It would take a little getting used to, for sure. Thanks so much for popping by. Happy Anniversary!
